Research

My research focuses on electrochemical detection of neurotransmitters in biological systems. Neurotransmitters are vital and their involvement in regular physiological responses such as learning, sleep, and stress, as well as diseases such as addiction and Parkinson’s make them an important area of study. Some neurotransmitters are electroactive and can be detected with electrochemical techniques, e.g. dopamine, serotonin, and epinephrine. Due to the sensitivity and high temporal resolution of methods like amperometry, these electroactive neurotransmitters can be detected even when released in small amounts.

Many aspects about how the neurotransmitters are released from or stored within a cell are still unknown. To remedy this, model systems of cell cultures (PC12 or chromaffin) or Drosophila are studied to gain new insights.
